Understanding Watercolor Art

Gary J. Boardman / Comment on this

Watercolor art is distinct in its fluidity, transparency, and luminosity, setting it apart from other painting mediums. For art buyers, grasping these unique qualities can enhance appreciation and inform purchasing decisions.

1. Medium Characteristics: - Watercolors are made by suspending pigments in a water-based solution, resulting in a transparent quality. This transparency allows layers of color to interact, creating depth and vibrancy, which is often difficult to achieve with other mediums like oil or acrylic.

2. Color Variability: - The way colors behave in watercolor is unique. When applied in layers, they can produce a wide range of hues, nuances, and gradients. This variability means that no two watercolor paintings are ever exactly alike, making each piece unique.

3. The Process: - Watercolor techniques involve working with water's relationship to pigment. Methods such as wet-on-wet (applying wet paint onto wet paper) create soft edges and unpredictable blends, while wet-on-dry (applying wet paint onto dry paper) allows for crisp lines and defined shapes. Understanding these methods can help buyers appreciate the skill involved in creating each piece.

4. Physical Properties: - Watercolor paintings are often created on paper, usually of high quality (100% cotton in many cases) to withstand the water. The texture of the paper (smooth, cold-pressed, or rough) can greatly affect the final look of the artwork. Buyers should consider the type of paper when selecting watercolor art, as it influences both aesthetics and durability.

5. Emotional Impact: - The fluid nature of watercolor often evokes a sense of movement and emotion. Buyers can appreciate how this medium can beautifully convey themes like tranquility, chaos, or even nostalgia, based on the artist's technique and expression.

6. Choosing the Right Piece: - When selecting watercolor art, buyers should consider whether the emotional feel and style resonate with them. Since watercolors often reflect an artist's personal touch, it's essential to choose pieces that speak to individual tastes and preferences.

By understanding these characteristics, art buyers can make informed decisions and develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty and uniqueness of watercolor art. This knowledge can enhance their enjoyment and satisfaction in their art collections.

Reduce your stress with Art

Gary J. Boardman / Comment on this

As a podiatrist I see many patients each week and our conversations are not always revolving around foot health. I see a lot of stress in the general population – all kinds of addictions, stress and all kinds of medications being taken to treat it all. Mostly young people. I have been seeing this long before COVID hit and much more after. I think by now we all realize that cellphones and social media apps have not been that great for any of us. Europe is in the process of banning social media for those under 16 – country by country.

As a father all this stress in young people worries me. I tell my kids often to find and interest, get a hobby – it seems to me that when we turn our will (our thoughts) and our life (actions) over to an interest or hobby, stress largely disappears, at least for a while. So why not pick up a pencil, charcoal, pastel or paintbrush or some other hobby – if only to reduce stress – you don’t have to be good at any of it but who knows – you might be. Maybe go to an art gallery or a museum where you will see a myriad of human accomplishments and forget about the high cost of living, climate change or fascism – at least just for a moment.

As a new artist I have been looking at the world differently.  There are artists that make a living off of their work – my hat is off to them – but this should not be the end goal – the urge to create seems to be innately human and stress reduction may be a serendipitous by-product. I have shared a recent painting of Sunnyside Pavillion on Lake Ontario in Toronto. For many this has been a place of recreation and relaxation for over a century.

Thank you for reading and I am happy to share my journey with you :)
